Today America celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence from the United Kingdom. Both sides used labels to attack each others motives, et cetera. Today, we also use labels to attack people, to disparage a persons integrity, to label them a misfit or different from who you are. Labels are also used to classify people into a group, eg. liberal, conservative, moderate, Christian, Jew, Black, White, green, or purple.
People use labels to mark themselves, depressed, smart, anxious, athletic, autistic, popular, downs syndrome, successful. When you identify yourself with negative signs, it may come true. A very kind friend of mine has been labeled as a failure, autistic, asperger's, or one of the many labels that society puts upon a child that God has claimed for His own. I do not see my young friend in any of the negative labels, I see him as a baptized child of God, an honest and loving man who has struggled dearly all of his short life. He epitomizes the Theologia Crucis, one who suffers under the Cross, an uneasy life to lead.
There are others who also suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous labels, but there is hope for you, also. First, do not label yourself depressed, unhappy, asperger's, et cetera. Others may label you, but we cannot change how they want to hurt you with their man-made label. Ignore them, they do not matter and neither do their labels. Now, I am not saying that labels do not hurt, they indeed can be very painful, but on we must persevere, but how? Joel Osteen? John Hagee? Matthew Harrison? The Church of Rome? The LCMS or ELCA? Methodist? Anglican? Eastern Orthodox? No, indeed no.
There is only one label that matters. Like my good friend, who is a Child of God. Not just any god, but the only God, the Trinity, the Father, the Son ✠, and the Holy Spirit.
Im Namen des Vaters und des Sohnes ✠ und des Heiligen Geistes. Amen
In nomine Patris, et Filii, ✠ et Spiritus Sancti. Amen
På vegne af Faderens og Sønnens ✠ og Helligåndens. Amen
På vegne af Faderens og Sønnens ✠ og Helligåndens. Amen
Yes, that is the only label that is necessary, the rest are superfluous, unneeded manmade words. I for one and my household will follow Christ and Christ alone. It is the only label that I need or want. To be known as a Christian, not pure and holy as the self-righteous see themselves, but forgiven in the Blood of the Lamb.
I wish to thank all of those who serve or have served our country during these uncertain times.
May the one and only true God bless you and all of America with His Holy Name this Fourth of July AD 2013, on Thursday the Sixth Sunday after Trinity.
